Sowing Seeds of Wonder: Gardening Adventures with Kids

lesterlk

Welcome! Today we are going to dive deep into the joys of gardening with our little green thumbs! Planting seeds with kids isn’t just about growing plants; it’s about nurturing curiosity, teaching patience, and fostering a love for nature as we watch our garden dreams bloom into reality.

A couple weeks ago, Kennedy (my 4 year old daughter) and I planted a variety of different seeds. We planted some seeds in dirt, and others we put into moist paper towels. We placed the paper towels into glass tubes in this hanging propagation station.  I thought it would be fun for her to see the seeds change and get to see the roots firsthand. She absolutely loved this!

Before we started digging in the dirt, we gathered our supplies: seeds, pots, soil, watering cans, and plenty of enthusiasm. I made sure to involve her in every step of the process, from choosing seeds to preparing the soil. We talked about the different types of seeds and vegetables we could grow and decided on a variety of seeds that come in this seed bundle and this herb bundle. We also purchased these pellet seed starter soil pods and this seed starting tray.

Before we started planting, I showed her the diverse shapes, sizes, and textures of seeds. It's always fun to encourage your kids to ask questions and explore the fascinating world of plants. She was so interested in the vast differences in the sizes of the seeds (bean vs. carrot for example).

After talking about the seeds and preparing our workspace, it was finally time to get our hands dirty! We filled pots with soil, planted the seeds, and gently watered our creations. For the hanging seeds, we placed 2-3 seeds in a moist paper towel and then placed the paper towel in a glass tubes that was hanging in the window. This hands-on experience teaches responsibility and patience as she eagerly awaits the first signs of growth.

As the days passed, we made a habit of checking on our seeds together. We discussed any changes we observed, such as sprouting seedlings or the emergence of tiny leaves. Kennedy was so excited to show her Daddy how the seeds changed each day. As the seeds have sprouted, we have had to move the tube plants into dirt so they can continue to get the nutrients they need to grown. We have also had to move some plants into larger pots to allow them more room to grow before we can move them outside when it gets warm enough.

We are still waiting for the moment to arrive when our efforts bear fruit (or vegetables)! Hopefully in a few short weeks we can celebrate our achievements and taste the literal fruits of our labor. I will make another blog post to cover this when that day comes!

Planting seeds with kids is more than just gardening—it’s a journey of discovery and growth for the whole family. As you nurture your garden together, you’ll cultivate cherished memories, strengthen bonds, and instill a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Whether you have acres of land or just a sunny windowsill, there’s magic to be found in planting seeds and watching them grow. So, grab your gardening gloves and let’s sow some seeds of wonder together!
